Google Search Console (GSC) is the single most important free SEO tool available. It shows you exactly how Google sees your site, what queries bring traffic, and what technical issues need fixing. Setting it up takes 10 minutes and should be step one for any SEO strategy.

Step 1: Create or Access Your Account

Go to search.google.com/search-console. Sign in with the Google account you want to manage the property. If you're setting up for a client, use their Google account or get them to add your account as a user.

    Step 2: Add Your Property

    • Choose between two property types:
    • Domain property (recommended): Covers all subdomains and protocols (www, non-www, http, https). Requires DNS verification.
    • URL prefix property: Covers only the exact URL prefix you enter. Easier to verify but less comprehensive.
    • For most sites, Domain property is the better choice.

    Step 3: Verify Ownership

Verification methods: 1. DNS record (Domain property): Add a TXT record to your domain's DNS settings 2. HTML file upload: Upload a verification file to your root directory 3. HTML tag: Add a meta tag to your homepage's `` 4. Google Analytics: Verify through your existing GA tracking code 5. Google Tag Manager: Verify through your GTM container DNS verification takes 24-72 hours to propagate. HTML tag verification is instant.

    Step 4: Submit Your Sitemap

Navigate to Sitemaps in the left menu. Enter your sitemap URL (usually `yoursite.com/sitemap.xml`) and click Submit. GSC will crawl your sitemap and report any errors. If you don't have a sitemap, generate one with Vincony's Site Audit tool — it identifies all indexable pages and generates a proper XML sitemap.

    Step 5: Understand Key Reports

Performance report: Shows clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position for your queries and pages. This is your primary SEO dashboard. Coverage report: Shows which pages are indexed, excluded, or have errors. Fix errors immediately. Core Web Vitals: Shows page experience metrics (LCP, INP, CLS) with pass/fail status. Links report: Shows internal and external links to your site.
